Our Story

Many years ago, my wife and I were repairing the foundation on the house we just bought. We had to demolish a pretty large deck that was in perfectly good shape when we did the repair, and I had to replace it with another one. I wanted to make sure that it was something that would last a long time, and I also wanted to make sure it was built in modules, so if we ever needed to take it apart again, I wouldn't have to send it to the landfill. I did a ton of research on how this could be done, and eventually figured out that I wanted an aluminum framing for the deck.

Aluminum framing was perfectly flat, so it was gonna look great. It's strong, it was never gonna rot or get eaten by bugs, and didn't have chemicals like pressure treated lumber. Also, unlike steel, aluminum doesn't rust either, which is a big bonus. The biggest problem was that building aluminum deck was not easily done, and there was no product like that on the market.

As a design engineer, I'd become really obsessed with this problem. I spent so many nights designing and redesigning a system that snaps together. It doesn't need tools. It's simple, very high quality and modular. So the aluminum deck I built for my family inadvertently turned out to be the first prototype, which would eventually become blokDEK®.

Not long after I built the deck, I had to take it apart to run a gas line, then again for some siding repairs as well. And it turned out to be very useful to have a modular deck system in the backyard that you could take apart any time you wanted. It was at that moment that I realized this was not just a cool concept, but a very useful invention.

Now, useful inventions are great, but there was a real challenge to make this a viable business. It had to be priced about the same as a wood frame deck. After more testing and obsessing and building a lot of prototypes, I founded block deck, we were finally selling aluminum deck systems that outperformed traditional wood decks in a lot of ways, better, life span, lighter weight. It stayed flat. It's fire resistant. But we also found a lot of customers were buying the product based on how it looked. This sleek simplicity was really striking a chord with people who wanted something a bit better or nicer looking than the average deck, especially the powder coated frame.

Last year, we launched blokDEK® across North America, and we're hearing from customers that they've been waiting for something just like this, a beautiful, well made deck shipped to them right when they need it.
